Asia Cup 2022: Who are the two Indian captains to score more than 300 runs in a single edition of Asia Cup?

India holds the record of winning the most number of titles in the history of Asia Cup

While India has won the Asia Cup title a record 7 times ahead of Asia Cup 2022, which is the most number of times any team has won this continental tournament, there have been only two Indian captains so far who have scored 300 runs in a single edition of the Asia Cup. Those two Indian captains are none other than MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma.

While MS Dhoni had done it in the Asia Cup of 2008 where he had scored 327 runs in 6 games at an average of 109 and a strike rate of 91, Rohit Sharma did it a decade later in the Asia Cup of 2018 where he scored 317 runs in 5 games at an average of 105 and a strike rate of 93. Both these talismanic Indian leaders scored a hundred and two fifties each in the two respective editions of the tournament.

However, the only difference between the Asia Cup of 2008 and 2018 was that India had lost the final of Asia Cup 2008 against Sri Lanka, while they won the Asia Cup of 2018 by beating Bangladesh in the final off the last ball of the game.

It’s unlikely that any batsman will be able to score 300 runs in Asia Cup 2022

After losing the final of the Asia Cup in 2008, India later won two Asia Cups under the captaincy of MS Dhoni in 2010 and 2016 respectively, but Dhoni didn’t score 300 runs in either of those two editions. The wicketkeeper-batsman was, however, India’s second highest run scorer in the Asia Cup of 2010 after Gautam Gambhir.

While Gambhir scored 203 runs in 4 games of Asia Cup 2010 at an average of slightly more than 50, Dhoni scored 173 runs in the same number of games at an average of 57. The Asia Cup of 2016 was played in the T20 format and India’s top-order batsmen mostly got the job done for India in that tournament. Dhoni didn’t get a lot of deliveries to face down the order.

Virat Kohli was India’s highest run scorer in the Asia Cup of 2016, as he scored 153 runs in 5 games at an average of 76 and a strike rate of 110. Asia Cup 2022 will also take place in the T20 format and it’s unlikely that any batsman will be able to cross the tally of 300 in this year’s tournament.

I write a bit on cricket and I am more interested in technical and tactical side of the game, rather than bravado.
