3 main reasons for Mumbai Indians’ failure in IPL 2024

It has been a terrible outing for Mumbai Indians in IPL 2024. Before the season started, many expected them to win the trophy. However, they are not even in the playoffs race and for a team like MI, this is a big downfall. A variety of reasons, apart from the individual form of certain players, are the causes for this display. On that note, here, we take a look at the list of three main reasons for Mumbai Indians’ failure in IPL 2024.

1) Noise outside the field

Right from the day when Hardik Pandya’s return was announced, the atmosphere around Mumbai Indians has not been great. This escalated after MI decided to hand the captaincy to Hardik from Rohit Sharma.

While no player has come forward to make any public statement, it is clear that this outside noise might have made its way inside the dressing room. This could have an impact on the performances of the players.

2) Inconsistent playing XI selection

Inconsistent playing XI selection is one of the main reasons for Mumbai Indians’ failure in IPL 2024. MI usually does not change their combination much but IPL 2024 was different. Always, they had too many players going out and coming in.

Especially in the bowling department, barring Jasprit Bumrah, no single player played in all the games. The likes of Nehal Wadhera and Dewald Brevis did not get too many opportunities. Nuwan Thushara only got games in the final half. All these affected the performance of the team.

3) Lack of role clarity for the players

When you take a look at the batting unit, there seems to have been a clear confusion when it comes to the roles. Even skipper Hardik Pandya had a confusing role. It was not sure if he was trying to be an accumulator or a finisher. He failed in both cases.

Rohit Sharma‘s performance should have been better but at times, he focussed too much on the team’s situation. Ishan Kishan and Tim David also had a problem in this regard. The same was with the bowlers, as well.
