Although these speculations are doing the rounds for quite some time, it’s now highly likely that MS Dhoni will be playing his last IPL season for CSK next year. Dhoni had tried to create a potential leadership successor for himself in IPL 2022 by giving the captaincy to Ravindra Jadeja, but that experiment didn’t turn out well and the captaincy was switched back to Dhoni in the middle of the season.
As the IPL 2023 mini auction comes along next month, CSK will be looking to sign some players to fill the existing holes in their squad, but they will also be looking at some of the options who can be the potential leadership successor for Dhoni.
Here are the 2 players CSK might target for future captaincy role in IPL auction 2023 –
Kane Williamson
Kane Williamson has been released by Sunrisers Hyderabad as his recent form in the IPL as well as in international T20 cricket hasn’t been great, but Kane is still regarded as one of the best captains going around in all formats of the game and he might have 5 years of cricket left in him.
It won’t be surprising if Chennai Super Kings target Kane Williamson in the auction purely from the point of view of having a future captaincy option from IPL 2024 onwards.
Priyam Garg
This name might surprise some of the fans, but the Chennai Super Kings head coach Stephen Fleming recently said on ESPNcricinfo that he is looking to develop some Indian captains for CSK captaincy in future. Priyam Garg is one of those young players in India who have got the experience of captaining an Indian side in the U19 World Cup.
Apart from being experienced in leadership at the junior level, Garg is a talented domestic Indian batsman as well and CSK has always been interested in domestic Indian batsmen. So, Garg is also one of the players CSK might target, both from captaincy and batting point of view in IPL 2023 mini auction.
