Former Australian captain Ian Chappell lashed out at England amid reports of Moeen Ali returning to Test cricket for Ashes 2023. He said that Moeen Ali isn’t the answer for them as he hasn’t gotten Australians out and he doesn’t understand why they are turning to him.

The greatest rivalry in the history of the game will yet again be on the show as England and Australia will lock horns with each other in the five-Test series. The Ashes 2023 is just a few days away from now as the much-anticipated series will begin on 16th June.
The second game is slated to take place on 28th June at Lord’s. The third game of the Ashes 2023 will be played on July 6th in Leeds whereas the last two games are slated to take place on July 19th and July 27th in Manchester and the Oval respectively.
England’s injury woes are getting bad to worse ahead of the Ashes. Now their lead spinner Jack Leach has been ruled out of the back stress fracture during England’s win over Ireland. The ECB are yet to announce his replacement but as per the various reports they have approached Moeen Ali to come out of retirement. The all-rounder called time on his Test career in 2021.
Ian Chappell said that even Jack Leach is not an option for England against Australia and he doesn’t understand why they have approached Moeen Ali. Speaking to Wide World of Sports, he said:
“I don’t understand England when it comes to spin bowling, because Jack Leach is not the answer, not against Australia, and I don’t think Moeen Ali is, either,” Chappell said.

Ian Chappell further went in to say that Australias would be happy if England picked Moeen Ali in the team because he doesn’t get out Aussies. He said:
“So I would have thought the Australians would be over the moon if they picked Moeen Ali … It’s got nothing to do with the retirement; he doesn’t get Australians out. So, unless he’s improved as an off-spin bowler, I don’t see why they’re turning to him,”
