The 2024 T20 World Cup will begin in June. Like in every edition, this campaign could also see the end of a few careers in this format. Unfortunately, for some of these players, if they do not lift the trophy in this edition, they might end their careers without having ever won the T20 World Cup. It would be a big miss in their glittering careers. On that note, here, we take a look at four legends who could end their careers without a T20 World Cup if they don’t win it in 2024.
1) Virat Kohli
For the T20 World Cup trophy itself, justice is not done if the greatest batter to have graced the format does not get his hand on the coveted trophy. The best batter in the T20I format and the best batter in the history of T20 World Cups, Virat Kohli is yet to win the trophy.
He tried his best to help the team in 2014, 2016 and also in 2022. However, it was not meant to be. He is likely to be selected for the upcoming edition, as well. Team India has a strong core and the squad will be desperate to win the trophy, especially after having lost the recent 2023 ODI World Cup.
2) Kane Williamson
Kane Williamson is one of the legends who could end their careers without a T20 World Cup if they don’t win it in 2024. Yes, his T20I format may not be the best right now. However, amongst the Fab 4, he is the second best T20 batter after Virat Kohli.
Williamson is yet to win a white-ball ICC trophy. He would be desperate to win the upcoming T20 World Cup. New Zealand has a strong team to make that happen.
3) Tim Southee
Tim Southee is currently the highest wicket-taker in the T20I format. Of course, that could change soon because there are a lot of active competitors in this regard. Nevertheless, taking more than 100 wickets in this format is not a small thing, especially when you are an all-format cricketer.
Southee is severely under-rated in this regard. He does well with the new ball and also closes out the innings with his trademark variations. The veteran picks a lot of wickets. He also does a decent job with the bat when it comes to the tail-enders. Yet, he has not won the T20 World Cup till now.
4) Shakib Al Hasan
Shakib Al Hasan is one of the legends who could end their careers without a T20 World Cup if they don’t win it in 2024. One of the greatest all-rounders of this era, Shakib happens to be one of the highest wicket-takers in the T20 format. With the bat, as well, there have not been many better players than Shakib, especially in Bangladesh.
Bangladesh promised to go to the next level a few years ago. However, a lot of controversies happened. The Bangladesh management could not find the youngsters who could take the team through the transition period. Hence, winning the T20 World Cup is a long shot for them. Hence, Shakib could end his career without any ICC trophy.
