IPL 2009: Most runs, Most Wickets, Most Sixes, Most Fours and Fastest Fifties

The Indian Premier League in 2008 saw a great start to it and what followed next season was an even better treat for the fans of the tournament. The tournament saw the Deccan Charges lift the trophy in the Finals and many records set in the 2008 season being broken and new ones made. There was a lot of buzz surrounding the season of the tournament as it had to be shifted to South Africa in a matter of weeks and what a treat it was to witness. So, here’s a look at some interesting stats from IPL 2009.

Most Runs in IPL 2009:

The top scorer of the tournament was none other than Mathew Hayden himself. The tall Aussie, playing for the Chennai Super Kings, in the 12 matches that he played in, scored 572 runs in total and maintained a strike rate of 144.81. Following Hayden was the captain of the Deccan Chargers, the team that won the tournament, Adam Gilchrist, who hit 495 runs in 16 games.

The 3^rd, 4^th and 5^th spots on the list of the top run-scorers were taken up by ‘Mr IPL’ Suresh Raina, JP Duminy and Herschelle Gibbs respectively. Raina had 434 runs in his account at the end of his 14 games, Duminy had a much lower total of 372 runs in 13 matches and coming in at the 5^th spot, was Herschelle Gibbs with 371 runs in 14 matches.

Most Wickets in IPL 2009:

The highest wicket-taker of the 2009 edition of the Indian Premier League, was from the Deccan Chargers, the tournament winning team, and his name was RP Singh. The pacer scalped as many as 23 wickets in 14 matches and was very miserly in giving away runs. And at the second spot in the wicket taker’s list was another legend of the game, Anil Kumble of the Royal Challengers Bangalore with 21 wickets in 16 games.

Lasith Malinga of the Mumbai Indians, followed Kumble, coming in at the 3^rd spot, as in the 13 matches that he played, he managed to pick 18 wickets. Finally, the 4^th and 5^th positions on the list were Pragyan Ojha of the Deccan Chargers who helped the team with 18 wickets in 15 games and Irfan Pathan of the erstwhile Kings XI Punjab with 15 wickets in 14 matches.

Most Sixes in IPL 2009:

The grounds of South Africa saw the sixes counter ticking throughout IPL 2009, as the Deccan Chargers Captain, Adam Gilchrist made sure with 29 sixes in 16 matches that the crowd was entertained at all times. The tournament’s highest run-getter, Matthew Hayden was the next batsmen, with 22 big hits in 12 matches.

Following Hayden closely was his own teammate, Suresh Raina, who hit 21 deliveries over the rope over the course of the 14 matches that he played. Rohit Sharma and Yuvraj Singh were the ones slotted in at the 4th and 5th positions in the players with the most number of sixes list, as Rohit hit 18 sixes in 16 games and Yuvraj managed to strike 16 balls into the crowd in 14 matches.

Most Fours in IPL 2009:

There have been many stories where players have challenged the batsmen to hit fours instead of sixes in a tournament like the IPL, and in 2009, it was Matthew Hayden who seemed to have perfected this craft. His 60 fours in the 12 matches that he played, made sure that he got to the top run getter’s spot and stayed there throughout the course of the tournament.

Adam Gilchrist was the next one to his the most number of fours as he fell short of his countrymate, by 6 hits, managing to get 54 fours in16 matches. The ‘Little Master’ Sachin Tendulkar came in at the 3^rd position in this list with his 39 fours and Suresh Raina along with Jacques Kallis also managed to make the cut with 37 fours in 14 and 15 matches respectively.

Fastest Fifties in IPL 2009:

When it came to hitting fifties, there was no other batsman who could surpass Adam Gilchrist in terms of pace during the tournament. In a match against now rebranded Delhi Daredevils, the Deccan Chargers skipper managed to get to the 50 run mark in just 17 deliveries. His counterpart from New Zealand, Brendon McCullum, who had already made a name for himself in IPL 2008, hit a fifty against the Chennai Super Kings in 21 balls.

Matthew Hayden of the Chennai Super Kings, grabbed the 3^rd and 4^th spots in this list as he smashed 2 fifties against Royal Challengers Bangalore and Delhi Daredevils in 22 deliveries. And, the next fastest batsman to get to a fifty during the tournament was Ross Taylor, who against the Kolkata Knight Riders smoked 24 ball half-century.
