IND v SL 2021: Why is Sanju Samson not playing today?

The Indian cricket team is playing the first match of the ICC Cricket World Cup Super League series against Sri Lanka right now. Colombo’s R Premadasa Stadium is playing host to this encounter. However, a key player is missing from the Indian lineup, and he is Sanju Samson.

The Rajasthan Royals wicket-keeper batsman had performed well in the first phase of IPL 2021. Still, the Indian team management picked Ishan Kishan in the playing XI. Interestingly, Kishan could not get going in IPL 2021, and the Mumbai Indians dropped him from their match squad before the BCCI suspended the tournament.

Now, an official update from the BCCI states that Sanju Samson is carrying a niggle. As a result, he is not playing for the Indian cricket team in the ongoing one-day international fixture versus the Sri Lankan cricket team.

“Sanju Samson sprained a ligament in his knee and was hence not available for selection for this game. The medical team is tracking his progress at the moment,” BCCI stated.

Injury to Sanju Samson allows Ishan Kishan to make his ODI debut for the Indian cricket team

Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan have represented Team India in the shortest format of the game. However, both players had never played an ODI match before. It was a race between the two youngsters for the wicket-keeping spot in the ICC Cricket World Cup Super League series between Team India and Sri Lanka in Colombo. Since Sanju picked up an injury before the match, the selectors had no other option but to go in with Ishan. Along with Ishan, his Mumbai Indians teammate Suryakumar Yadav is also making his ODI debut today.

Here is the Indian cricket team’s playing XI for the first ODI match against the Sri Lankan cricket team: Shikhar Dhawan (c), Prithvi Shaw, Ishan Kishan (wk), Manish Pandey, Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, Krunal Pandya, Deepak Chahar, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal.
