Gautam Gambhir is all set to take over as the Head Coach of the Indian Team. Usually, we see coaches prefer a certain few players as the captain. For Rahul Dravid, it was Rohit Sharma. Similarly, Gambhir could have some fresh ideas. On that note, here, we take a look at the list of three players who could make their captaincy debut with Gautam Gambhir as Head Coach of Team India.
1) Shreyas Iyer
Both at Delhi Capitals and also at KKR, Gautam Gambhir has seen the captaincy skills of Shreyas Iyer. At IPL 2024, Iyer was brilliant with his captaincy which helped KKR win the title.
Iyer is an important part of the ODI setup for Team India. The likes of KL Rahul, Hardik Pandya, Rishabh Pant and Jasprit Bumrah are in the fray after Rohit Sharma retires. However, Iyer is an ODI specialist and it would not be a surprise if Gambhir prefers him.
2) Sanju Samson
Sanju Samson has already got sufficient captaincy experience in the T20 format. If India is going on a tour to nations such as Zimbabwe, Sanju might even get to captain the side.
He is a player who is yet to show his best in the Indian jersey. As a captain, Gambhir might prefer him, especially when a second-string Indian squad is on tour.
3) R Ashwin
R Ashwin is one of the players who could make captaincy debut with Gautam Gambhir as Head Coach of Team India. It is surprising that India never consider Ashwin as a captaincy option for Team India.
There would be a situation at home when India might not have all their senior men available. Irrespective of that, as well, Gambhir could try Ashwin as a captain. Ashwin, for the service he has done to Indian cricket, very much deserves this opportunity.
