The second edition of the Lanka Premier League is set to take the stage during the July-August window in 2021. After the first edition came out as a big hit, the management plans to conduct the 2nd season considering the COVID scare aside. Jaffna Stallions emerged out as the victorious side last year under the leadership of Thisara Perera.
July 30 has been marked as the opening date of LPL’s 2021 edition. The tournament will last till August 22, which will feature the final match between the top 2 sides. Even though Covid-19 cases have been on the rise in Sri Lanka, the management hopes to keep the tournament intact with some extra security and bio bubble precautions.
SLC Vice President Mr. Ravin Wickremaratne said, “Last year’s success has certainly made a difference with more players from many cricket playing countries looking forward to play in the LPL, which is a very good sign for the League and Sri Lanka cricket.”
However, this year might feature some exciting changes. The Indian Cricketer Yusuf Pathan has also registered for the tournament. Some of the big names for the tournament also include Shakib Al Hasan.
A total of players from 11 countries have made themselves available for the mega event. Usman Khawaja, James Faulkner, Ben Cutting, Nicolas Pooran, Sheldon Cottrell, Tabraiz Shamsi, Morne Morkel etc. are some of the prominent names who have registered themselves for the event.
Lanka Premier League 2020 kept the fans on their feet.
A total of 5 teams featured in the first season of Lanka Premier League. Danushka Gunathilaka was the highest run-scorer of the tournament, with a total of 476 runs under his name. Wanindu Hasaranga had the perfect tournament with the ball as he bagged 17 wickets and ended the league as the highest wicket-taker. It would be exciting to see how the 2nd edition of LPL goes.
