Twitter reacts as late declaration by India allows New Zealand to draw the Kanpur test match

India were in a great position to beat New Zealand in the Kanpur test match

Twitter users were not very pleased today as New Zealand managed to get away with a draw against India despite being under severe pressure in the Kanpur test match.

New Zealand were 9 wickets down with more than 8 overs to go in the 5th day’s play, but the last pair of the visitors hung in for a long time and eventually denied India a victory as the umpires eventually took the players off the field because of bad light.

India dominated large portions of the test match and clearly looked the better team, but New Zealand still got as many World Test Championship (WTC) points from the game as India got, and that’s what frustrated the Indian fans a lot.

The fans were annoyed with the team management as well which declared the second innings late yesterday, not allowing the Indian bowlers to have New Zealand 2 or 3 down coming into the 5th day’s play.

Once India crossed 250 yesterday, there was a feeling among the Indian fans that it was going to be extremely hard for the Kiwis to chase in the fourth innings and India could afford to declare early.

But, the Indian management and captain Ajinkya Rahane still kept delaying the declaration and as it turned out, India eventually fell short of time.

Bad light caused an early end to the 5th day of the Kanpur test match

Ajinkya Rahane said in the post-match presentation that the reason why the Indian lower-order batsmen didn’t push the run-scoring quicker on day 4 was that they wanted to get a partnership going.

When the umpires stopped the play due to bad light on day 5, there were still 15 minutes left in the day’s play, but the light reading that was taken on the first day of the game had to be applied on all 5 days and once they reached that reading, they had no option, but to stop the play according to ICC guidelines.

I write a bit on cricket and I am more interested in technical and tactical side of the game, rather than bravado.
