After a decent contest of cricket that almost dragged until the last over between Punjab Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders, one split decision by the third umpire grabbed a lot of eyeballs.
In the 18th over of the game, KL Rahul smacked Shivam Mavi’s short ball to the deep mid-wicket region where Rahul Tripathi rushed in a good five to seven yards from the ropes to take a forward diving catch.
The umpiring conundrum
Though there was no soft decision, it was referred to the third umpire for a review. After a good deal of time spent on the review the third umpire ruled it in KL Rahul’s favour turning the on-field decision into not out.
This decision sparked a debate on Twitter as netizens were split into two factions with some quoting that it was out while others said that the third umpire was correct.
Though KL Rahul didn’t last long as Venkatesh Iyer got the better of the Punjab skipper with a fuller delivery, however, the match didn’t end in Kolkata’s favour as Shahrukh Khan hoicked Iyer to the ropes with a spoonful of fortune going his way.
With this victory, Punjab still kept their hopes alive while KKR will have to battle hard to maintain their momentum to remain in the top four.
The story of the match led by Rahul
Venkatesh Iyer pulled off a decent show with the bat as he hammered a 49-ball-67 to announce a rollicking comeback. Nitish Rana and Rahul Tripathi chimed in with a decent cameo too.
KL Rahul batted decently to keep Punjab afloat with an explosive knock from Mayank Agarwal. Despite the Kolkata bowlers reeling things back in, it wasn’t enough for Kolkata to produce a victory.
Twitter poured their opinions over this sensitive affair with the factions divided.
I think ball little bit touch the ground so, its definitely not out!

To those who said Rahul Tripathi's catch was not out, can you clarify me why the pic on left was given out? pic.twitter.com/VHU2yb0bag

Dunno about you but the catch that Rahul took looked OUT to me. I thought the removal of soft-signal would get more clarity but on this occasion, it led to confusion. 3D sport. 2D pictures. #KKR ##PBKSvKKR

A thread on the soft signal. When they did away with the soft signal, this was a scenario waiting to unfold. You have to balance the inexact judgement of an umpire's soft signal for a catch in the deep with the fact that it will always be ruled not out on a reply. (1/n)
