IPL 2020 is going to the next level as we witnessed not one, not two but three super overs in a day. History was created in the game between Kings XI Punjab and Mumbai Indians as the first super over was tied and we had to go to the second super over.
Bowling in the super over is never easy as the batsmen are coming hard at you with only six balls to face. Having said that, there are some bowlers who have managed to pick up both the wickets in a super over. So, let us have a look at six such bowlers who have achieved this feat in the IPL.
1. Jasprit Bumrah
The Indian pace bowler who is known for his Yorkers is the go-to bowler for Mumbai Indians when it comes to the super overs. Bumrah has bowled a super over in 2017 against GL, 2019 against SRH, and two times in 2020. Bumrah has managed to pick up both the wickets in the latest super over against KXIP. He dismissed Nicholas Pooran off the second ball and then dismissed KL Rahul on the last ball and gave away just five runs. Unfortunately, the MI batsmen couldn’t score the runs and the game went into another super over.
2. Lockie Ferguson
Lockie Ferguson was playing his first game in this season was asked to bowl a super over for Kolkata Knight Riders. He had bowled well in the main game as he picked up three wickets. He was asked to bowl the super over against the likes of David Warner and Jonny Bairstow and he delivered. He dismissed David Warner off the first ball and then got rid of Abdul Samad on the third ball which meant KKR needed only three runs to win the super over. He executed his variations to perfection as the stumps went flying on both occasions.
3. Kagiso Rabada
Kagiso Rabada has been the go-to man for Delhi Capitals when it comes to super overs. He bowled a tremendous Yorker against Andre Russell in the last season and even in this season, he did his job. Their first game of the season went into the super over and he was up against the likes of KL Rahul and Nicholas Pooran. He got rid of them in the first three balls and as a result, DC needed only three runs to win the game. Rabada is currently the purple cap holder of this IPL season.
4. James Faulkner
The Australian left-arm bowler has bowled two super overs in the IPL, one for RR and the second one for GL. Playing for Gujarat Lions he was up against the likes of Jos Buttler and Kieron Pollard in the super over. To everybody’s surprise, he got rid of both the batsmen and restricted them to just 11 runs. Unfortunately, Jasprit Bumrah bowled a better over and GL couldn’t chase down the score.
5. Ravi Rampaul
Ravi Rampaul was asked to bowl the super over for RCB against Delhi Daredevils. RCB batted first in the super over and scored 15 runs which meant DD needed 16 to win the super over and the match. David Warner was on strike and Rampaul was going to bowl the super over. He got rid of Warner on the first ball as he played a cut shot straight into the hands of Chris Gayle. The match went on to the last ball of super over as DD needed five to win off the last ball with Ben Roher on strike. Ravi Rampaul bowled a brilliant Yorker which rattled the stumps of Roher and RCB won the super over.
6. Rusty Theron
Rusty Theron who used to play for Kings XI Punjab had to bowl a super over against Chennai Super Kings way back in 2010. Albie Morkel and Matthew Hayden came out to face the South African pacer. Theron got rid of Hayden on the second ball and then on the fifth ball got the wicket of Suresh Raina who got a top edge. KXIP needed ten to win and they did it easily. Theron was the first bowler in the IPL to pick up both the wickets in a super over.
