Marnus Labuschagne along with Steve Smith were the two batters that Ricky Ponting picked at No.3 and No.4 respectively in the Australian team. There were no surprises as Travis Head, Cameron Green and Alex Carey will be the middle-order batters in his team.

Nathan Lyon will be the spinner according to Ricky Ponting in the Australian XI whereas he picked Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc as two frontline pacers in the team. What was surprising was he left Josh Hazlewood due to injury concerns and picked Scot Boland in his place.
