On Tuesday, June 4th, Argentina kicked off their campaign against Saudi Arabia in the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. How Lionel Messi approached the game was fascinating to see. Messi is playing in his sixth World Cup, and he has often said that this will be his last tournament. In his fifth attempt, he’d want nothing more than to finally win the coveted crown.
After VAR helped Argentina win a penalty kick against Saudi Arabia, Lionel Messi scored the game’s first goal.
It appeared that Lionel Messi had scored his and Argentina’s second goal, but the flag was quickly raised, negating the score. The first goal Messi scored earlier made him the second-oldest player to score for Argentina in a World Cup. Lionel Messi also etched yet another record. He became the first player to score in four different World Cup tournaments for Argentina.
For PSG, Messi has been sensational as well, with seven goals and 10 assists in only thirteen Ligue 1 games. As a huge danger in the final third, he has contributed to four goals and as many assists in the Champions League in only five games.
The striker is hoping to give his supporters something to cheer about by continuing his goal-scoring streak in the FIFA World Cup.
Messi and the rest of the Argentine team are on a roll right now, as they have won their last five games and are undefeated in over 35 games. In their opening match, La Albiceleste will be hoping to perform well.
Next-door neighbors of the host nation Saudi Arabia will be playing with a chip on their shoulder as they try to avoid being humiliated by Lionel Messi and company.
A win for the Middle Eastern team would need them to rediscover their shooting touch. Worryingly for Saudi Arabian supporters, their team has scored only once in its past five matches.
