Erstwhile all-rounder and one of the leading members of Ireland’s cricketing lore, Kevin O’ Brien called it a day in his cricketing career on Tuesday afternoon. The announcement came on the player’s official Twitter account where he posted a thanking note, expressing gratitude for his close people.
Kevin O’Brien had a longstanding career in cricket and is the longest server of Ireland in the 22 yards. He played a staggering 266 matches for Ireland across a span of 16 long years. He was the face of Irish aggression across the ages, where he would stitch together crucial knocks, bringing out the heavy artillery if needed.

Here is a glimpse at the iconic career of Kevin O’Brien
The Irish batter quoted that he was planning to stitch together a show in the upcoming world but an incessant run of lean patch forced him to call it quits before the biennial extravaganza could allow him to return. The omission from the national squad also played a significant part in his decision of stepping down from the sport.
The last time the hard-hitting Irish starrer featured in the national side was in the 2021 T20I World Cup where his exploits weren’t good enough. He is the only Irish batter to score a Test ton while he is the third-highest run-getter for Ireland in ODIs with an overwhelming haul of 3619 runs next to his moniker that was also coupled with 114 wickets.
Kevin played alongside his elder brother Niall in the Irish for a major part of his career before the latter chose to call it a day in 2018. Kevin’s fairytale outing came in 2011 when he scorched an imperious 113 off just 63 balls to inflict a punishing defeat on England as history would remember it as a three-wicket win for Ireland against England.
Twitter bowed down in utmost respect as a towering moniker in Irish cricket hung up his boots after a career that could be labeled as a glistening one in the context of modern cricket.
Kevin O’Brien really transformed cricket in Ireland. Wonder how things would've been had Morgan decided to stay.
