When you talk about gifted batsmen from this generation one name which pops up in everybody’s head is Rohit Sharma. Rohit Sharma made his debut for India way back in 2007 and in 2021 he is one of the white-ball greats. Rohit Sharma has done some things which many batsmen can’t even think of doing. His white-ball career took a different direction when he was asked to open in 2013.
Since 2013, his performances have been on a different level. There is no doubt that the Indian vice-captain is a match-winner for India in the white-ball formats. He has started his red-ball career as an opener in a good way and if he keeps doing well then can be part of the Test squad for another 4-5 years. Rohit Sharma has set so many records that it is difficult to list all of them but some of them are very unique. There are a few records that will be very difficult to break and let’s have a look at five such records.
5. Most T20I centuries
Rohit Sharma might have struggled with his batting form in the IPL in the last 2-3 seasons but when it comes to international cricket, he turns on a different switch. India’s white-ball opener has scored four T20I centuries in his T20I career which are the most by anyone in the world.
He has hit a century against South Africa, England, West Indies, and Sri Lanka. His century against Sri Lanka came in just 35 balls. The next best in the number of T20I centuries is Colin Munro with three to his name. Scoring a century in T20Is is not an easy task because a batsman doesn’t have enough time to complete a century and so it will be difficult to break this record from Rohit Sharma.
4. Most IPL Trophies as a Captain
Mumbai Indians bought Rohit Sharma in the 2011 Mega Auction. He is one of their key players from 2011 to 2013 but in 2013 when Ricky Ponting stepped down from captaincy, Sharma was handed over the captaincy and he won the IPL trophy in his first attempt.
After that MI win the IPL in 2015,2017,2019 and 2020. Rohit Sharma has won five IPL titles as captain and six as a player. It is unbelievable that one captain has managed to win five titles in one of the toughest leagues in cricket. MS Dhoni is second on the list with three to his name but Rohit Sharma will get more chances and he might end up winning one or two more titles. Any captain wouldn’t be able to replicate this kind of success in the IPL.
3. Most Centuries in a World Cup
The previous record for the most number of centuries in a World Cup was held by Kumar Sangakkara who had scored four centuries in the 2015 World Cup but Rohit Sharma went past him as he scored five in the 2019 World Cup. Scoring five centuries in cricket’s biggest tournament is not an easy thing.
He was in sublime form as he kept on piling the runs against each team. Unfortunately, India couldn’t win the World Cup but this record might remain with the best batsmen of the 2019 World Cup.
2. Highest ODI Score
A few years ago, when an ODI used to start the experts or commentators would say that 250-260 would be a good score but in 2014 Rohit Sharma changed everything as he scored a total of 264 runs individually in an ODI against Sri Lanka.
Rohit Sharma just smashed all the Sri Lankan bowlers as he went on to record the highest individual ODI score of 264 and was dismissed off the last ball. Many batsmen have scored double centuries but nobody has managed to cross 250 and so it is going to be a herculean task for some batsmen to break this record.
1. Most Double Centuries in ODIs
Until 2010 when Sachin Tendulkar scored the first double century in ODIs no one even believed that a batsman can score 200 runs in a game individually. Scoring a hundred in an ODI is a great thing and scoring a double hundred is just unbelievable.
After the first double century, many other batsmen reached that landmark but nobody did it twice apart from India’s Rohit Sharma and he has not only done it twice but thrice. Rohit Sharma scored his first double century against Australia in 2013, his second against Sri Lanka in 2014, and his third against Sri Lanka in 2017. There is no doubt that this record of scoring multiple double hundreds in ODI cricket will be the most difficult to break.
