Back in those days, breaking into the playing XI of the Indian cricket team was an easy and simple process because there was no bench strength and moreover, the players were picked based on their performances in domestic cricket.
However, the Indian cricket team that we are seeing now is built with totally a different strength altogether. The team management is backing the players when it mattered the most but at the same time, questions were raised on the board for their partiality towards some players.

Meanwhile, former India manager by the name of Sunil Subramaniam asked a stern question to the Indian cricket team management as to why they have been ignoring talented players like Shubman Gill and Prithvi Shaw.
For the record, former Tamil Nadu player Sunil Subramaniam served as India’s manager and was also a part of Ravi Shastri’s team management in the 2018 series. He added that five years ago it was a different situation because KL Rahul was a youngster and needed the necessary backing from the team management.
While speaking to the Times of India, the former India manager echoed that the current situation is entirely different and that there are young players knocking on the door.
He further added that there are players like Shubman Gill and Prithvi Shaw waiting in the wings. Moreover, he felt that it is not right to ignore these prospects since they are really talented.
Shubman Gill got more opportunities to express himself when compared to Prithvi Shaw for India. Recently, Gill became the youngest cricketer to score a century across all three formats of the game.
