With their 2-1 comeback victory against Real Madrid in El Clasico, Barcelona made a giant step toward claiming their first La Liga championship since 2019.
The game-winning goal scored by Franck Kessie in added time gave Barcelona a 12-point advantage over second-placed Real with 12 games remaining. After the final whistle sounded at Camp Nou, Barcelona’s players gathered together and rejoiced.
For the second straight game, the VAR came to the rescue of the Catalan club as an apparent goal by Marco Asensio in the 81st minute was disallowed due to offside.
They defeated Athletic Bilbao 1-0 last week thanks to a goal disallowed on video review that would have tied the game in the 87th minute. The majority of the game was dictated by Barcelona’s dominance versus Real, as they were the team who produced the most of the game’s best scoring opportunities.
Ronald Araujo, a defender for Barcelona, scored an own goal in the ninth minute when he headed in a cross from Madrid winger Vinicius Junior from the left side of the penalty area.
Barcelona defeat Real Madrid 2-1
Sergi Roberto tied the game in the 45th minute after scooping up a loose ball inside the area. Kessie scored the game-winning goal in stoppage time on a breakaway from the centre of the box.
In less than three weeks, this was the second meeting between the two teams. In the first leg of the Copa del Rey semi-finals, played on March 3 at Santiago Bernabeu Stadium, Barcelona prevailed with a score of 1-0. On April 5, the teams will meet again at Spotify Camp Nou for the second leg.
On April 1st, Barcelona will travel to Elche to play a La Liga encounter. Real Madrid will host Real Valladolid in a league game the following day.
