BCCI announced the Indian squad for the Asia Cup on Monday. It was a 17-member squad and it won’t be a surprise if India’s selection for the 2023 ODI World Cup would be the same. However, ICC’s rules mean the team can only consist of 15 players. Hence, a few cricketers would miss out. Here, we take a look at three Indians selected for Asia Cup but might be dropped for the 2023 ODI World Cup.

1) Tilak Varma

It was a major surprise to include Tilak Varma, who is yet to make his ODI debut. Sanju Samson, who has played quite a few ODIs till now, did not make the cut. It might be down to having a left-handed middle-order batter for selecting Tilak.

However, if the likes of KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer settle in, Tilak might not get an opportunity. Ishan Kishan could anyways be used here and hence, Tilak might be dropped from the squad.

2) Prasidh Krishna

After a long injury lay-off, Prasidh Krishna has recently returned to the Indian setup. However, he would be under pressure to perform or he could get dropped.

Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami and Mohammed Siraj cannot be dropped. Shardul Thakur has been a successful seamer in ODIs in recent years. India cannot select five pacers and hence, Prasidh might get the axe.

3) Suryakumar Yadav

Suryakumar Yadav is one of the Indians selected for Asia Cup but might be dropped for the 2023 ODI World Cup. If KL Rahul regains his fitness, SKY could more or less lose his spot in the side.

India might need an extra spinner or a spin-bowling all-rounder. With Ishan Kishan anyways there as the backup, the management could leave SKY out. This would also depend on how SKY would perform in the Asia Cup. He is likely to get a few games until KL Rahul returns.
