​2022 World T20 Format Explained: Here is how the T20 World Cup will be played

Know all the necessary details about the latest edition of the T20 World Cup

In less than a month and a half, one of the biggest cricketing extravaganzas will be unfolding ahead of us as the 2022 T20 World Cup is all set to be played Down Under in late October. Featuring the best cricketing teams of the world in the shortest format, the biennial extravaganza’s latest edition will also stay witness to a curtailed version of the qualifiers that would see four teams making it to the round of elites as the Super 12s will be kicking off.

From thereon, two teams from each group will be making it to the semis and needless to say, the two best teams of the tournament face each other in the grand finale that will be held on November 13th at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. As the tournament kicks off from October 16th, a lot of questions are already doing the unexpected rounds and here are a few important answers that may keep your mind at rest as the wait for the grand cricketing fest is already pulsating.

How are the Groups decided in T20 World Cup?

There will be a total of 16 teams going into the tournament that will be featuring the likes of Afghanistan, Australia, Bangladesh, England, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, Namibia, Scotland, Sri Lanka, West Indies, Ireland, UAE, Netherlands and Zimbabwe.

Eight out of these 16 teams have made the cut based on their top eight rankings in world cricket in the shortest format of the game. The remaining 6 teams will be duking it out in Round 1 of the tournament out of which only 4 will be making the cut for the top 12 teams.

Based on the current T20 rankings amongst the groups, in Group 1, Afghanistan, Australia, England and New Zealand was clubbed with Winner of Group A and Runner-up of Group B from the qualifiers while Group 2 includes Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, South Africa and runner up of Group A and winner from Group B from the qualification stages.

How do T20 World Cup qualifiers work?

The T20 World Cup qualifiers will be played between groups where six teams will be vying for qualification and 4 of them will be moving forward to the Super 12.

Group A of the qualifiers will have Namibia, Netherlands, Sri Lanka and the United Arab Emirates. Group B will be featuring the likes of Ireland, Scotland, West Indies and Zimbabwe.

All the teams in each groups will be playing three games each and the winner of the Group A and runner of Group B will be joining the others in Group 1 while the runners of Group B and the winners of the same group will be joining Group 2 where they will have to take on India.

The Men in Blue will be reprieved to bring their primary power in Jasprit Bumrah back to the side while the return of Harshal Patel will be another crucial uplift.
