2 Surprise selection in India’s squad for the Asia Cup 2023
BCCI announced the Indian team for the Asia Cup 2023 on Monday (21st August). Rohit Sharma will be captaining the team whereas KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer, Jasprit Bumrah and Prasidh Krishna made a return into the team after being out for a long time due to injuries. The squad also saw some surprise picks as well and in this piece, we take a look at that:
One of the biggest surprises in the India squad for the Asia Cup 2023 was Tilak Varma. The young batter made his debut against West Indies in the T20I series and showed a lot of promise in all five games, ending up as the leading run-getter for the team. His temperament and maturity impressed selectors and they picked him. It wasn’t expected that he would be included in the senior team but to his fortune he got a nod ahead of other players. He has been an impressive performer in domestic cricket and also his left-hand batting tempted selectors.
Another surprising selection in the Indian squad for the Asia Cup 2023 was of Suryakumar Yadav. The batter has been part of the Indian squad for a while but has been failing consistently in the 50-over format and it wasn’t expected that he would be there in the team. But to many surprise, despite failing in all the games he has played, the right-hander was there in the team. It’s fair to say that team has been backing him because of what he has done in the T20I format.
