After the conclusion of the ongoing T20 season, the five-day matches will start. While the WTC finals will happen first, the all-important Ashes will follow. The series starts on 16th June in the UK. A few players could be playing in their final Ashes series this time around. Here, we take a look at two Australian players who might be playing their last Ashes Test series in 2023.
1) David Warner
The southpaw has been struggling for form in recent months. Against India recently, he failed in the opportunities that he got. Later, he got injured and had to fly back to Australia. Although he would still be backed to take a spot in the playing XI, the margin for failure will be very narrow for Warner.
Australia will be wanting to kickstart their transition for the opening spots in the Test squad. Hence, if Warner does not perform well, he could be dropped soon. Moreover, Warner is 36 years old and with the next Ashes likely to happen when he turns 38, it is highly doubtful that the player can make it. Hence, he is on this list.
2) Usman Khawaja
Usman Khawaja is one of the Australian players who might be playing their last Ashes Test series in 2023. The left-handed opening batter was in fine form against India recently. Especially when Australia plays in the subcontinent, the role of Khawaja has been immense. However, he has had his struggles in other nations.
Nevertheless, Khawaja is likely to play all five games of the series, mainly due to his recent form and the lack of a consistent partner at the other end. Like Warner, Khawaja is also 36 years old and it could be hard to expect him to play one more Ashes. Australia might rather prepare a young opening duo that could serve the team for a few more years.
