WWE is moving full steam ahead towards their next pay-per-view for the next month titled WWE Extreme Rules taking place in the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on October 8. This will be the first edition of this pay-per-view to be held in the month of October and also the first to take place on a Saturday instead of the old traditional Sunday previously followed by the WWE.
The road to Extreme Rules is shaping up in the weeks leading up to the event, with its first match made official pitting Liv Morgan against Ronda Rousey for the Smackdown Women’s Championship. The rivalry has been brewing for months with Liv picking two lackluster wins over The Baddest woman on the planet and looking to put down the MMA Hall of Famer for good. This week on Smackdown saw the feud escalate with the match now taking place under Extreme Rules stipulation.

An Extreme Rules match is a hardcore stipulated professional wrestling match in the WWE, also known by other names such as Guerrilla Warfare, Belfast Brawl, or the Devil’s Playground match with no count-outs, no disqualification and falls count anywhere encounter with the only way to emerge as the victory to pin or make your opponent submit.
The match also leverages the competitors to use any sanctioned weapon, allow multiple superstars to get involved in the match to cause interference and attack Superstars, and usage of any type of wrestling moves (except for the moves banned by the promotion) to their advantage to secure the win.
The type of weapons seen to be used by competitors in this type of match comprises steel chairs, sledgehammer, ladder, table, ringside stairs, kendo sticks, baseball bats, and cylindrical trash cans to name a few. The type of matches has featured some of the top-tier talents of WWE of today and yesterday such as Roman Reigns, Seth Rollins, Becky Lynch, Alexa Bliss, John Cena, Triple H, Sheamus, Randy Orton, Shawn Michaels, and Chris Jericho listed among the competitors to compete in this physically grueling match.
Extreme Rules match came into prominence during the 1970s in Japan and later on in the hardcore style of ECW in the 1990s and nowadays in the WWE. This type of hardcore match can also be referred to as a No Holds Barred or a No Disqualification match with the only difference being the pinfall to be counted inside the squared circle.
WWE has known to produce some of the greatest Extreme Rules in history such as Roman Reigns VS Demon Finn Balor last year, Alexa Bliss vs Nia Jax in 2018, and Roman Reigns VS AJ Styles in 2016 as classic examples on the name-sake show.
