Former Indian opener Virender Sehwag has opined that Indian captain Virat Kohli must bat at No.3 at the upcoming T20 World Cup. In the England series held earlier this year, Virat had hinted that he would open alongside Rohit Sharma. However, Viru felt that KL Rahul would be the better partner for Rohit at the moment.
Sehwag feels Virat Kohli must bat at No.3
Speaking on Cricbuzz, Sehwag believed that someone should convince Virat to give up his desire of playing as an opener. He said, “If I was a part of the Indian support staff, I would definitely try and convince the captain that he is better off at No. 3. If KL Rahul opens, it will be better for us. At the end of the day, it is the batsman’s call to decide the batting order, but if so many people are suggesting something, he listens.”
KL Rahul is in hot form at the moment
KL Rahul has arguably been the best Indian T20 batsman in recent years. He has also led the batting charts when it comes to the recent IPL editions. Viru said that KL’s current form must be utilized by the management.
Regarding this, Sehwag said, “But the thing is – I doubt there’s anyone who can tell Kohli that he should not open and instead bat at No. 3. That is the matter. The way KL Rahul is batting, if he opens in international cricket, and he gets the freedom to play the way he did the other evening against CSK, then he can be an extremely dangerous player.”
The 2021 edition of the T20 World Cup will begin on October 17th. Being held after five years, the event will be hosted in the UAE and Oman. Recently, Team India made a change to the squad by drafting in Shardul Thakur in the place of Axar Patel.
