Virat Kohli has become the first-ever cricketer to have 50 or more wins under his belt in all three formats of the game, which is a remarkable achievement in modern-day cricket. The victory in the second test match against New Zealand was Kohli’s 39th test victory as a captain and 50th as a player since his test debut in 2011.
With cricket having become a specialist’s game now in terms of playing different formats and not too many players around the world having nailed their positions as all format cricketers, it’s very much possible that Kohli’s record of 50 wins in all three formats might never get leveled by any other cricketer in future.
While India has remained a fairly dominant team in 50-over and 20-over cricket since the debut of Virat Kohli, despite the fact that they have struggled to win world titles since 2013, Kohli saw a lot of defeats in test matches cricket in an initial couple of years of his Test career.
Virat Kohli made his test debut for India at a time when the Indian selectors were looking for a transition. Kohli was among the few young batsmen who were tried for the middle order roles, as some of the legends of Indian cricket retired.
Kohli was a part of the India team that got whitewashed 4-0 in Australia in 2012, lost the series 1-0 in South Africa in 2013, suffered a massive 3-1 loss in England in 2014 and a 2-0 loss in Australia again in 2015. But, since he took over India’s test captaincy, he turned around the fortunes of the Indian test team.

It was not just with his leadership that Kohli made a huge difference to India’s test match set up, he scored heaps of runs in the longest format of the game all across the world against some of the fiercest bowling attacks.
The only big disappointment that India has suffered under the captaincy of Kohli in test match cricket in recent times is the loss against New Zealand in the World Test Championship (WTC) final, where they couldn’t stamp their authority as the best test team in the world.
Even in T20 cricket in the last few years, the Indian team under Kohli won bilateral series in England, Australia, South Africa and New Zealand, but they faltered in T20 World Cup recently in the UAE. Despite the fact that the world titles haven’t been there, the sheer number of games that Virat Kohli has won as a player and as a captain in the last decade or so is unmatchable.
