Growing up reliving and witnessing the memories of her great cousins in the wrestling arena, has been a ride filled with adrenaline for Vinesh.
Vinesh’s cousins Geeta Phogat and Babita Kumari are also wrestlers. Both of the cousins have won a gold medal in the 55kg category in the Commonwealth games. Their cousin, Ritu Phogat, is also a wrestler.
In order to be involved in competitive wrestling, Vinesh and her family have faced a lot of hardship. They were judged as going against the morals and values of their community. However, after loads of problems, she made it to the bigger stage. In all her competitions representing India, she has 4 Gold, 3 Silver and 6 Bronze medals to her name.
She won gold in Commonwealth and Asian games and became the first-ever Indian woman wrestler to do so. Vinesh also became the First Indian Athlete to be Nominated for Laureus World Sports Awards which was held on February 18, 2019.
She was awarded the Arjuna Award back in 2016. That was followed by her being a nominee for the prestigious Padma Shri in 2018 by the Sports Authority of India (SAI). She then won the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna in 2020.

In the 2016 Summer Olympic Games at Rio de Janeiro, she finished with Rank 10th in the 48 kg category.
In 2019, Vinesh Phogat bagged a maiden World Championship medal in the women’s 53 kg category after pinning Maria Prevolaraki in the Bronze medal match. She then became the first Indian wrestler to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics 2020, courtesy of her top-six finish.
