FIFA World Cup winners: Lusail stayed witness to history as two of the finest teams in the antiquity of football jousted for supremacy and in a war of the killing machine and the messiah it was an impregnable wall that created all the difference between two almost inseparable sides. Argentina clinched the FIFA World Cup after a staggering wait of 36 years as Lionel Messi eventually got to make the trophy his own.
It was a pulsating encounter as two of the finest sides rocked and rolled the stadium for a momentous 120 minutes with penalties deciding the fate of the contest. The first few minutes witnessed two teams lashing out at each other vehemently with Argentina savouring the lion’s share of the manoeuvres. As the salvo kept on growing, the Frenchmen’s poise crumbled with Dembele committing a howler inside the box as he tripped Di Maria after failing to contain the latter.
Messi stepped up and hammered home a clinical spot-kick to send the fans into an ecstasy land of their own as the Little Magician created a world record by scoring in all the knock-out games of a World Cup. It was as little as 13 minutes before Argentina almost confirmed their superior status in the game till then as Di Maria latched onto a Mac Allister pass and nudged it home after a fine run on the far left.
Just when it felt that Argentina will simply run away with the title, Kolo Muani managed to wriggle out a penalty after Otamendi completely misjudged his speed and ended up bringing him down inside the box. It was Mbappe who stepped up for the penalty and calmly slotted it home. All it took Argentina to bring themselves back in the game was a solitary minute as Kylian Mbappe showed his true class, volleying home Thuram’s impeccable cross beyond the out-stretched hands of Emi Martinez.
It was in the 108th minute where Lionel Messi struck for the second time in the game to help Argentina secure a third with the French defenders scrambling desperately while it was another spot-kick that helped France restore parity through Kylian Mbappe. Unfortunately, Kingsley Coman and Aurelien Tchouameni who missed their penalties to hand the trophy over to Argentina.
