“Losing is fine, but we were weak,” Furious Gautam Gambhir addresses LSG players after thumping defeat against Gujarat Titans

LSG could have qualified for the IPL playoffs if they had beaten Gujarat Titans last night

Gautam Gambhir, the mentor of Lucknow Supergiants, was absolutely furious with his team’s performance in the game against Gujarat Titans in the IPL last night.

The Supergiants are one of the best performing teams in this year’s IPL and are in the top 2 in terms of the number of points, but yesterday, they had the opportunity to qualify for the playoffs, if they had beaten Gujarat Titans. However, not only did Lucknow lose the game, they lost it by a huge margin of 62 runs despite chasing only a modest total of 145.

There is a video shared by the official social media handles of Lucknow Supergiants where Gambhir can be seen talking to the LSG players and he is telling them in quite a direct manner that it’s not the defeat which matters much in sport, it’s actually the manner of defeat which matters.

Giving up is not acceptable in a tournament like IPL: Gautam Gambhir

According to Gautam Gambhir, one team has to win and one has to lose in sport and losing is fine, but LSG didn’t just lose against the Titans. They were weak and at times, it seemed as if they just gave up on the game and that’s not acceptable because there are going to be times in this competition when they will be challenged and they have to respond to that, they can’t just give up.

Gautam Gambhir has always been one of those characters who have been very straightforward with his opinions and even when he was the captain of KKR, he used to speak very directly to his players about what he thought of their performances. Under Gambhir’s leadership, KKR won two IPL titles in 2012 and 2014 respectively.

And now as a mentor as well, Gambhir’s manner of working doesn’t really seem to have changed and he is still very direct and doesn’t want to push big defeats under the carpet at all.

I write a bit on cricket and I am more interested in technical and tactical side of the game, rather than bravado.
