It’s time for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The first game of the four-match series will take place between India and Australia in Nagpur. The hosts have been asked to bowl first on a surface which seems dry.

India has handed debut caps to KS Bharat and Suryakumar Yadav for the first game and preferred KL Rahul and Axar Patel over Shubman Gill and Kuldeep Yadav. While the rest of the selections were quite certain, one omission raised the eyebrows of many of Gill.

The Punjab batter was expected to play in the first game as he has been in sensational form of late and has been scorings runs consistently. He scored a century in the last Test he played and batted staggeringly well. It was also expected that if not opening, Gill would be given an opportunity in the middle as his record is exceptional.

But he was not given a nod ahead of KL Rahul, who of late has struggled to get going, and Suryakumar Yadav, who is yet to play a Test match. Skipper Rohit Sharma at the toss revealed the Indian playing XI and confirmed that they have opted for the combination of three spinners and two pacers.
