SWE vs UKR: Group E table-toppers Sweden will take on Ukraine in the Round of 16 contest at Hampden Park in Scotland.
The ever determined Sweden started their campaign with a draw against Spain followed by a 1-0 win against Slovakia. They were amongst the strongest candidates to qualify and certainly had to earn their place in the next round after their last game against Poland.
Emil Forsberg’s brace had kept Sweden up in the running for an easy win but Robert Lewandowski had other plans. He replied a minute later with a scorcher and followed that with a late equaliser that shocked one too many. However, substitute Viktor Claesson scored the winning goal for Sweden in the added stoppage time and entered the Round of 16 filled with adrenaline.
Ukraine, on the other hand, started their campaign with a 3-2 loss against the Netherlands. They followed it with a stunning 2-1 victory against North Macedonia. They faced Austria in their last game of the group stages. An early goal by Austria’s Christoph Baumgartner sealed the victory for the side while leaving Ukraine in a tough situation. However, with a win in hand, they qualified for the next round.
Sweden will be coming into this encounter as favourites with their recent form in the tournament. However, a winning advantage against the former will certainly help Ukraine.
