Six instances fans bashed umpires for poor decision in IPL history

IPL has become the most popular T20 cricket league on the planet, with fans from all over the world enjoying the 2020 edition of the IPL. This season is much different than the earlier ones as there is no live audience for the matches of IPL 2020. 

However, one can say that the umpiring errors have remained constant in IPL as there was a massive error from the on-field umpire during the last match between DC and KXIP. 

Here’s a look at the six instances when umpires committed horrendous mistakes in IPL and received backlash from fans.

Wrong short-run given in IPL 2020

As mentioned ahead, in the match between Delhi Capitals and Kings XI Punjab, the square-leg umpire gave a wrong short run to Punjab. This short run led to the team’s defeat. Hence, fans were naturally upset after this incident. 

No-ball not given in IPL 2019

In the IPL 2019 match between MI and RCB, the last ball of the match bowled by Lasith Malinga was a no ball. The umpire failed to spot it. Fans of RCB lashed out on the umpire. Subsequently, there was a new rule introduced to detect no balls. 

Wide ball not given in IPL 2019 final

Another incident from the previous edition of IPL is involving Kieron Pollard. A ball during MI’s innings was a wide delivery, but the umpire said it was a fair one. Kieron lost his cool and also 25 percent of his match fee for showing dissent to the umpire. Even the MI fans were unhappy with the decision.

Wrong no ball given in IPL 2019

One more entry from IPL 2019 on this list is from the match between RCB and SRH. Umesh Yadav had not overstepped, but the on-field umpire Nigel Llong still declared it as a no-ball for overstepping.

This instance will always be remembered because of how MS Dhoni came to the field after the umpire raised his hand for a no-ball and then took it away. He suggested that one of the umpires was declaring it as a no-ball but suddenly had a brain fade type moment. Lastly, CSK won the match against RR. 

Wrong no ball in IPL 2018

Tom Curran played for Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2018 and one of his legal balls was adjudged a no ball by K.N. Ananthapadmanabhan. Since half of his foot was behind the crease, the fans bashed the umpire for the wrong decision.
