Former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar gave his verdict on if Ajinkya Rahane should be part of the Indian squad for World Cup 2023. He said that he should the part of the red-ball squad but not white-ball as the team should try giving opportunities to youngsters who are performing well.
Ajinkya Rahane makes a staggering comeback through IPL 2023
The last one month has been gold for Ajinkya Rahane. The batter has made a staggering comeback in the white-ball format with his stellar performances in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 while playing for Chennai Super Kings
His stellar performances in the league along with his decent domestic circuit have earned him making a comeback into team Test team for the ICC World Test Championship Final. Notably, he was dropped from the Indian team last year owing to poor performances.
With him going great guns in the IPL, Sunil Gavaskar was asked by a fan if India should include him in the middle order for the Cricket World Cup 2023, especially with injuries to Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul.

Gavaskar, however, wasn’t in favour of it. He feels that instead of him team should give opportunities to Ruturaj Gaikwad and Yashasvi Jaiswal in the middle over. Speaking on Star Sports, he said:
“Good idea but no not at the moment. Rahane in a Test match yes, but white-ball somebody else, some youngster who is doing well like Gaikwad or Yashasvi. There is no place at top but they can get a place in the middle.”

S Sreesanth, who was also present at the discussion, gave his verdict on the same topic. He said that he won’t be surprised if Ajinkya Rahane gets a place in the squad for the Cricket World Cup 2023.
Ajinkya Rahane last played an ODI match for India in February 2018. He has featured 90 ODIs and scored 2962 runs at an average of 35.26.
