One captaincy mistake which costed Gujarat Titans the game against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in IPL 2023 qualifier 1

Gujarat Titans skipper Hardik Pandya didn't make a move which could have changed the game

While the Gujarat Titans skipper Hardik Pandya is making a name for himself with his leadership qualities, a renowned cricket analyst Prasanna thinks that the allrounder made a captaincy mistake in the last night’s qualifier 1 against Chennai Super Kings (CSK).

CSK beat Gujarat Titans in the first qualifier yesterday to make their way into the finals of IPL 2023. CSK batted first and they hadn’t actually put a huge score on the board, but given the fact that the surface was a slow one, the CSK spinners came into play and made match winning impact for the hosts.

Gujarat Titans should have sent Vijay Shankar at no. 3

According to Prasanna, the mistake that the Gujarat Titans made was they didn’t send Vijay Shankar at no. 3, when Shankar had actually batted at that position in the last game against RCB on a slow wicket in Bengaluru and had scored a match winning half-century.

Prasanna also insisted in his tweet that since Vijay Shankar plays for Tamil Nadu in the domestic cricket of India, he knows the ground at Chepauk well and he also knows which are the shots to play on the slow Chennai surface.

With his knowledge and experience of the ground conditions, if Shankar had batted at no. 3, he could have helped Gujarat Titans control the chase in a much better manner than they did. Shankar eventually batted at no. 7 in the chase and although he hit a six straight down the ground, he perished shortly after that, trying to play another big shot over deep midwicket.

Gujarat skipper Hardik Pandya has batted at no. 3 in most of the games during this IPL season, but in the game against RCB, he had held himself back and sent Shankar at 3, a move which paid dividends straightaway. According to Prasanna, who is also the analyst of Johannesburg Super Kings in SA20, Gujarat should have continued with Shankar at 3 against CSK as well.

I write a bit on cricket and I am more interested in technical and tactical side of the game, rather than bravado.
