The World Test Championship Final is just around the corner. Not only this but after that there’ll be another challenge coming up for the Australia team after that. After the WTC final that will be played from 7th to 11th June, they will lock horns in the Ashes 2023.

The Ashes 2023 will begin from 16th June in Edgbaston, which will be followed by the second game on 28th June at Lord’s. The third game will be played on July 6th in Leeds whereas the last two games are slated to take place on July 19th and July 27th at Manchester and the Oval respectively.

Australia has named their squad for the WTC final and the first two Tests of Ashes 2023. There were many speculations about whether David Warner will find a place in the team or not. The southpaw has been under the scanner for a while for his poor form of a run.

But Warner managed to find a place in the side and it’s most likely that he will open the innings for the team. But Michael Atherton feels that the southpaw is lucky to find a place in the team despite his average dropping down.

He said that because of not-so-seasoned openers in Matthew Renshaw and Marcus Harris in the team, Warner has managed to find a place in the team. Speaking to six sports, he said:

“Warner has been a great player for a long time, that is the first thing to say. His form has dropped off significantly over the last few years and he is 36 years of age so he is in the last bit of his career. If they had an absolutely top notch, ready-made replacement, then there might have been a stronger case for leaving him out.

“But if you look at those who are in the squad as kind of back-up openers – Matthew Renshaw, Marcus Harris – they are not really established Test-match openers. So they are desperate for Warner to have one last hurrah here in England.”
