Fans on Twitter react as MCC amends Non-striker run-out law. They called the move fantastic and said that it was great leaving no doubts about where the onus lies as far as running the non-strikers.
MCC amends Non-striker run-out law
Despite, MCC moving Mankading, which is running out the batter at the non-striker’s end by the bowler if he leaves the crease before the ball is delivered, from Law 41 (Unfair play) to Law 38 (Run out), the mode of dismissal has invited a massive debate with many calling it within the spirit of the game whereas some terming it as against the spirit of the game.
However, with all the talks related to the dismissal Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) amended Non-striker run out law. Earlier if the non-striker left his/her ground before the expected moment of release, then the Run out could happen at any moment, even after the bowler had gone through the bowling action.
Now after the amendments, if at any time from the moment, the ball comes into play until the instant when the bowler would normally have been expected to release the ball, the non-striker is liable to be Run out if he/she is out of his/her ground.
In these circumstances, the non-striker will be out Run out if he/she is out of his/her ground when his/her wicket is put down by the bowler throwing the ball at the stumps or by the bowler’s hand holding the ball, whether or not the ball is subsequently delivered.”
The laws will be effective from 19th January 2023.

“The instant when the bowler would normally have been expected to release the ball is defined as the moment the bowler’s arm reaches the highest point of his/her normal bowling action in the delivery swing.”
Highest point in @malinga_ninety9’s action was when he kissed the ball! https://t.co/cX029xztkF

This is fantastic by MCC. Leaving no doubts about where the onus lies as far as running the non-strikers. https://t.co/Sl6Y4IaxOV pic.twitter.com/i84Z4jl7xb

I know it’s controversial, but I have absolutely no issue with a ‘Mankad’ and fully believe the batter shouldn’t be able to steal a meter on the bowler https://t.co/Gly7SDWzU0

The MCC has tweaked for clarity the wording of Law 38.3 following the recent unsuccessful Zampaing of Tom S Rogers. #Law38_3RunOut #Kinloching #Barkering https://t.co/VjCWATxBxt

Much needed clarification.
AdvertisementHowever can the non-striker not be made liable to runout from the moment play starts and ends for the ball? Just can't understand the need for that "until the instant when the bowler would normally have been expected to release the ball" part. https://t.co/ZhW33sUN9L

So you can be run out at the non-strikers end until the bowler's arm reaches its highest point in their action. This seems sensible and easily actionable (does suck be Pathirana though as his arm reaches its full height about 45 minutes before he bowls) https://t.co/iP8AJyiKq2

"Non-striker is liable to be run out until when bowler would normally have been expected to release the ball (arm reaches highest point of bowling action)"
This is still subjective. Why not have the law simply say "non-striker can be run-out until bowler releases the ball" ? https://t.co/lgVw1wqxp3

"There is one very simple way that almost all confusion and controversy around this form of dismissal can be eradicated: by non-strikers remaining within their ground until they have seen the ball being released from the bowler's hand." https://t.co/CxACq2r69H

Yes yes yes but…. Leaving the crease early to sneak an advantage is a skill. Running out the bugger who does that? Not so much. https://t.co/sbYpYKUB4G

Thank you @MCCOfficial. As ever, stay in your crease and this never comes into play. Loving the FAQ document too, esp the thoughts on the alternatives you considered https://t.co/vSFyj8WBmq https://t.co/T7MDwZQEom

Good job!! Still some won't be able to digest this. Can't do much about it !!! Just keep running batters out till they learn to be in the crease !!! #MCCLaws #CricketTwitter https://t.co/9pGyjoqkDh

This is a Law that players and umpires have understood pretty well, but the wording was ambiguous, so we've moved to correct that. And, at the same time, we've put out a big Q&A on the whole subject.
TL;DR – stay in your ground and you can't be Run out! https://t.co/9xTwDKv9OO
