At the moment, the best spinner in the game of cricket is R Ashwin. His performance and consistency have got him that honour. However, just a couple of years ago, like most cricketers, Ashwin also went through a tough phase. In this article, we take a look at the snippets of a recent interview in which R Ashwin looks back at a tough phase in his career.
R Ashwin looks back at a tough phase in his career
In a chat show called ‘Backstage with Boria‘, Ashwin spilt beans on how it was when he had to endure a rough patch. He said that he could hear negative comments whenever he went to play a club game.
Explaining, he said, “As a sportsman, you are engulfed by criticism. You want to overcome that. A lot of people wrote me off. I used to walk into club games in Chennai and I used to put in the hard yards. And I would hear murmurs about people saying ‘this guy is coming and playing because his international career is done, he is finished’. I used to keep hearing these things. Sometimes it’s easy to laugh off, sometimes it hurts.”
2021 has been a terrific year of the Tamil Nadu off-spinner
2021 has been a terrific year for the spinner. In Tests, he finished as the leading wicket-taker with 52 scalps. Ashwin also managed to contribute with the willow. He even got a hundred against England in the early part of the year.
In the white-ball format, Ashwin managed to execute a comeback into Team India. He was called up for the T20 World Cup. In the home series against New Zealand, too, Ashwin was a part. On December 31st, Ashwin’s name was in the ODI squad for the series against South Africa. Hence, 2021 was a memorable year for the Indian cricketer.
