“If you tell Virat Kohli today to bat like Suryakumar Yadav, he can’t,” Gautam Gambhir feels the selection of players based on a template is crucial for India for Cricket World Cup 2023

2023 World Cup 2023 will take place in India.

Former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir feels that selection of players based on the template is crucial for India for the Cricket World Cup 2023. He said that team needs to assign specific roles to players, saying that If they tell Virat Kohli today to bat like Suryakumar Yadav, he can’t and vice versa.

“You need to identify the players who got that fearless approach and probably in a format like 50 overs you need to have a mixture of every kind of player,” says Gautam Gambhir

The road to Cricket World Cup 2023 for the Indian Cricket Team is about to get begin. The ICC tournament is slated to take place in India in October and November. 2022 wasn’t the kind of year that Men in Blue would’ve wanted and therefore they would be hoping for normalcy to return in 2023.

They will play more than 25 ODIs and it’s fair to say that it’ll be the best possible chance for them to prepare.  After facing heartbreaks, they have one more chance to put their hands on the ICC trophy as Cricket World 2023 is just around the corner. The event will take place in India in October and November and with home conditions on offer, the Men in Blue will be clear favourites to win the event.

BCCI recently revealed that they have shortlisted 20 players and they will be rotated in the games ahead of the World Cup to prepare them for the event. It’ll also be a great opportunity for the team to give clarity to players and assign them a specific roles.

Gautam Gambhir shed light on the same topic. Speaking on Star Sports, he said: “First, you need to identify the players who got that fearless approach and probably in a format like 50 overs you need to have a mixture of every kind of player. Some players can anchor their innings. Change in the role has also made a huge difference. During that time we had only one new ball, now we’ve got two new balls with five fielders inside.

So, the role of a part-timer has gone out of the window. The reverse swings, you don’t see enough reverse swings anymore, you don’t see enough of chase for the finger spinners as well. But, I always feel that when we talk about this new approach, which India always talks about, the template and stuff, you’ve got to identify players who can adapt those roles or that template very easily.”

“If you tell Virat Kohli today to bat like Suryakumar Yadav, he can’t,” says Gautam Gambhir

Gambhir further cited the example of Virat Kohli and Suryakumar Yadav saying that they can’t play each other’s role. He added:

“I can’t play like Yousuf (Pathan), he can’t play like me. If someone asks me to follow Yousuf’s template, I won’t be able to do that. Similarly, if someone asks Yousuf to follow my template, he won’t be able to do that. That is why the identification of players is very important. If you tell Virat Kohli today to bat like Suryakumar Yadav, he can’t. If you ask Surya to play like Virat, he won’t be able to do that,” Gambhir concluded.
