The former Indian captain Kapil Dev has revealed that he still gets sleepless nights sometimes when he remembers the six that Javed Miandad hit off the bowling of Chetan Sharma in the India Vs Pakistan final of Austral-Asia Cup in 1986.
According to Kapil Dev, it was only one game, but the result of that game was so morale crushing for the entire Indian team that it took the Indian players a few years to completely forget it. Kapil was captaining the Indian team in that game and he was the one who had decided to give the last over to Chetan Sharma against a well set Javed Miandad.

Kapil recalled the game on a Star Sports show recently and he said that he feels his decision to go to Chetan Sharma for the last over was the right decision and Chetan’s choice of delivery was also right, because he looked to go for a yorker.
But, it’s just that Chetan missed his mark by an inch or two. It would still have been difficult to hit for Miandad if he had gone slightly back in his crease because in that situation, it would have turned into a very low fulltoss, but what Miandad did was he remained still in his position and his backfoot didn’t go further back in the crease at all.

When Chetan Sharma missed his yorker, it came at a very nice height to Miandad because he was totally still in his crease and he managed to time the ball to perfection to send it sailing over the ropes. Kapil said that it was a deliberate plan to go for the yorker because the probability of Miandad getting a boundary from the other lengths was even higher, as he was well set and was seeing the ball nicely.
