“I felt alienated after Gautam Gambhir left KKR,” Robin Uthappa reveals he didn’t enjoy his last couple of IPL seasons at KKR

Robin Uthappa retired as a 3-time IPL winner, out of which two titles came with KKR

The former KKR and India cricketer Robin Uthappa has made sensational claims regarding his last few years in the KKR set-up. Uthappa has revealed that he sees his KKR career in two phases.

One phase where Gautam Gambhir was the captain of the team and the other phase where Gambhir was allowed to go into the auction and the leadership changed in the team.

According to Robin Uthappa, when Gambhir was the skipper of KKR, he enjoyed himself a lot in the KKR camp and was able to express himself, but as Gambhir went, things just couldn’t remain the same and he felt “alienated”.

Uthappa, who won two IPL titles with KKR in 2012 and 2014 respectively, was in line to become the captain of KKR when Gambhir left, but rather than promoting Uthappa to the rank of captaincy, KKR decided to go with a fresh leadership option. Dinesh Karthik was appointed the new captain and Uthappa remained in the team just as a player.

Robin Uthappa then went to Rajasthan Royals and later went to Chennai Super Kings where he ended up winning the third IPL title of his career in 2021.

Uthappa, in his tweet, wrote that his detachment with KKR towards the end of his career had nothing to do with the fact that he was not given the captaincy. He just didn’t feel connected to the team in the same way he felt connected when Gambhir was in charge of the side.

Uthappa faced a lot of criticism from the KKR fans after his tweet about KKR, but he stressed that he has no malice towards the fans at all and whatever might have been his relationship with the KKR team management towards the end, he never lost respect for KKR fans and even now he respects the fans a lot.

I write a bit on cricket and I am more interested in technical and tactical side of the game, rather than bravado.
