During the first COVID lockdown in 2020, many people feared for their careers, and Ravichandran Ashwin was no different. The veteran Indian spinner, who has now climbed up to no. 3 in the list of all-time leading wicket takers for India in test cricket, has revealed that during the lockdown in March-April of 2020, he was not sure if he was going to represent India again.
Ravichandran Ashwin recalled he was playing only test cricket for India at that point of time, and he was not in the playing XI of the last test match India had played before the lockdown, which was the second test match on the tour of New Zealand.
Ashwin was in conversation with the debutant Shreyas Iyer at the end of the Kanpur test match yesterday, where India and New Zealand shared WTC points as the game finished as a draw on the fifth day. While Iyer scored a century and a fifty in the game, Ashwin grabbed 6 wickets and went past Harbhajan Singh’s 417-wicket tally with the wicket of Tom Latham in the second innings.
“I had not played the last Test in Christchurch. I was standing at the crossroads thinking whether I would play Tests again. Where is my future headed?,” Ashwin said in a video uploaded on BCCI’s official website.
Ravichandran Ashwin thinks stint with Delhi Capitals helped him build confidence
Talking about his stint with Delhi Capitals, Ashwin said the fact that he moved to Delhi Capitals ahead of IPL 2020 helped him get his career revived as well, as he stitched together some good performances for Delhi and built confidence before the Australia tour where he was pivotal in India’s historical triumph in Border Gavaskar trophy.
Ravichandran Ashwin is now a free agent in the IPL as he is all set to go into the upcoming mega auction, having not been retained by Delhi Capitals, but his international career is back on track now. He has cemented his spot in India’s T20I team again, and he might also be in line to make a comeback to the ODI squad now.
