Explained: What is the difference between cancelled game and Forfeited game in International Cricket

The game of cricket is one of the most unpredictable ones. And especially in uncertain times like these, it is tough to see the live cricket action happening regularly. The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted cricket matches across the world. Last year, for the first time in the Indian Premier League history, the entire competition happened behind closed doors in the United Arab Emirates.

Earlier this year, the Indian Premier League began in India, but after half of the league stage was completed, the tournament had to be suspended by the BCCI because there were some players who contracted the Coronavirus during the match. At that time, the BCCI decided to suspend the competition indefinitely. They also agreed to postpone the match between the Royal Challengers Bangalore and the Kolkata Knight Riders owing to a positive case.

Many cricket games were cancelled in the COVID-19 pandemic

Fans know the term ‘cancelled’ games because it has been used frequently during the Coronavirus pandemic. The matches are unable to happen due to various reasons. And whenever a match is cancelled, there is no winner or a loser from that match. However, right now, the fifth Test match of the ICC World Test Championship series between the Indian cricket team and the England cricket team has become a talking point.

The reason behind it is that according to the England Cricket Board, the Indian cricket team will be unable to field a team for the fifth Test match scheduled to happen at Old Trafford from today onwards. As per reports, ECB wants the BCCI to forfeit the match because the team is unable to field an XI.

The main difference between forfeit and cancelled game

As mentioned ahead, there is no winner or loser in a cancelled game. In a forfeit, there is no live action on the field, but the team that is unable to field a XI is the loser of that game.

Hence, if the result of the fifth Test match of the ICC World Test Championship series between the Indian cricket team and the England cricket team is a forfeit, then India will lose the 5th Test, with the series ending 2-2 scoreline. As of now, it is unknown if the Test is forfeit or cancelled.
