“Do you think I would have been a good T20 bowler?” Curtly Ambrose asks Darren Ganga about his short format bowling potential

Curtly Ambrose was one of the most fearsome fast bowlers of his era with the ability of generating plenty of pace and bounce

The former West Indies fast bowler Curtly Ambrose is one of the legends of the game and enjoyed great success in test match cricket and ODIs, but he never played T20 cricket, as the shortest format of the game was not there at all when Ambrose was active as a player in the cricketing arena.

But, yesterday when Curtly Ambrose was commentating on the T20 international game between Bangladesh and West Indies, he asked his fellow commentator Darren Ganga how he would have fared as a T20 bowler if the format was there in his prime.

Darren Ganga, who played a bit of T20 cricket during the latter stages of his career and captained Trinidad and Tobago in a tournament like the Champions League, told Ambrose that he would have done well as a T20 bowler because he had the ability to adapt his bowling according to the batsmen and according to the situation of the game.

“You just didn’t have a slower delivery,” Darren Ganga told Curtly Ambrose

Adding further to his point, Ganga stated that the reason why Curtly Ambrose would have been a good T20 bowler is that he had the ability to bowl yorkers and bouncers. The only thing that he probably didn’t have in his arsenal was a slower delivery, something which his bowling partner Courtney Walsh had.

Ambrose agreed with Ganga’s point and said that although he didn’t have great slower delivery, he would have developed one if T20 cricket was there during his time and if he had felt that a slower delivery was needed for him to outfox the batsman.

Curtly Ambrose got a total of 630 wickets in his international career, out of which 405 wickets came in test cricket in just 179 innings. Ambrose averaged as low as 20 per wicket in the longest format of the game, which earned him legendary status as a test match bowler.

I write a bit on cricket and I am more interested in technical and tactical side of the game, rather than bravado.
