The 2022 edition of the Indian Premier League started today with a match between the Chennai Super Kings and the Kolkata Knight Riders. All eyes were on the likes of Ruturaj Gaikwad, Devon Conway and Shivam Dube. However, they could no impress much as CSK suffered a collapse and were down to 61/5.

Gaikwad, who won the IPL 2021 Orange Cap title, was out for a duck, whereas Conway returned to the pavilion after scoring three runs off eight balls. Both batters lost their wickets to Umesh Yadav who played an IPL game after a considerable gap.

“I think it’s quite a fresh wicket. It’s the first match so it’s gripping a touch. There’s good bounce and it helped the fast-bowlers and the spinners. Always nice when you do something good for the team and I picked up wickets in the Powerplay so I’m very happy,” said Yadav after the first innings of the match between the Chennai Super Kings and the Kolkata Knight Riders.

Talking about the CSK collapse, Robin Uthappa played a decent knock but he got out to Varun CV courtesy of a smart stumping from new wicket-keeper of Kolkata Knight Riders team Sheldon Jackson. Shivam Dube managed only three runs, while Ambati Rayudu was unluckily run out.

One of the major reasons behind the Chennai Super Kings’ success in recent years was the fantastic performance of Faf du Plessis in the top-order. The right-handed batter was the second-highest run-getter last year and narrowly missed out on the Orange Cap.

The cricket universe was surprised when the Chennai Super Kings did not buy him back at the IPL 2022 Mega Auction. Twitterati felt that du Plessis’ presence could have helped CSK avoid a collapse today. Here are the top reactions:
