Former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir has named a youngster whom he feels can become the future Indian captain. He backed young Prithvi Shaw to lead the side and said that the right-hander can be a very aggressive and very successful captain.
Prithvi Shaw’s roller coaster ride in cricket
Prithvi Shaw rose to the ranks after he led India U19 to the World Cup win in 2018. Not only he impressed many with his captaincy skills but he also led from the front and score truckloads of runs. Later that year, he went on to make his Test debut and scored a century in his maiden innings for India.
However, after his eye-catching performance on debut, he missed out on some matches due to an injury he suffered in Australia on the 2018-19 tour and then suffered a ban from the BCCI for failing a drug test.
Following the COVID-19 pandemic break, Shaw’s fortunes have taken a tumble as he failed drastically in IPL 2020 in UAE and then his problems got compounded by his failures with the moving ball in Australia.
Amidst his failure, Shaw was dropped from the side after the first Test of the last Border-Gavaskar trophy and was replaced by Shubman Gill, who impressed everyone with his elegant stroke play and kept his spot ahead of Shaw for the England home Test matches.

He got a chance in the white-ball team in July 2021, when he was part of a second-string squad that toured Sri Lanka for three ODIs and as many T20Is. But after that, he hasn’t been part of India’s squad.
However, he has been a consistent performer in the domestic circuit and is continuously knocking on the doors of selectors. He also is leading Mumbai in the domestic games and is doing a terrific job as a skipper as well. Shaw had a terrific Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, where he scored 332 runs in 10 innings at a strike rate of 181.42.
Gautam Gambhir backs Prithvi Shaw to be the next India captain
Gautam Gambhir feels that Shaw can be a good choice for the Indian captain in future as he can be aggressive and successful as well. Speaking at an event, he said:
“The reason I’ve picked Prithvi Shaw, I know a lot of people talk about his off-field activities, but that is what the job of the coach and the selectors are. The selectors’ job isn’t just to pick the 15, but also to get people to walk the right path. Prithvi Shaw is one I feel can be a very aggressive captain, a very successful captain because you see that aggression in the way a person plays the sport.”
Prithvi Shaw also has been an internal part of Delhi Capitals in IPL. The right-hander has been providing his team with a fiery starts and is one of the main reasons behind their success of late.
