CSK now have 18 points to their name in just 11 matches. Many times fans have seen that the IPL teams fail to make it to this number even after playing 14 matches in the league stage of the Indian Premier League.
Now that the Chennai Super Kings have attained the 18-point mark by winning four consecutive matches in the United Arab Emirates, the MS Dhoni-led outfit has an opportunity to break an all-time IPL time record soon. That record is for the most points scored by one team in a single season of the Indian Premier League.
Chennai Super Kings can break their own record
To date, five IPL franchises have accomplished the feat of scoring 22 points in one IPL season. As many members of the cricket universe would know, each team gets two points for winning a match in the league and there are no points for losing. A team needs to win 11 matches out of 14 games in an 8-team IPL competition to attain 22 points.
It is a very difficult job but the Rajasthan Royals achieved it in the very first season. Four years later, the Delhi Capitals too finished with 22 points, but it was a 9-team IPL and the teams played 16 league matches. In IPL 2013, both Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians finished with 22 points, but again it was a 9-team IPL. The last team to achieve this record were the Punjab Kings who topped the standings in an 8-team IPL by winning 11 of their 14 matches. Now, if CSK win their remaining three league matches, they can become the first franchise to earn 24 points in one season.
Which teams will battle CSK in the upcoming IPL matches?
CSK have played 11 matches and have three more games remaining in this year’s league stage. Their next opponents are the inaugural champions of the Indian Premier League, Rajasthan Royals, who will battle tomorrow.
CSK’s last two matches are against Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings. The CSK vs. DC match will happen on October 4, while the game between CSK and PBKS is scheduled to happen on October 7.
