Indian off-spinner R Ashwin is in a hurry to finish the ongoing first Test against Australia in Nagpur. The off-spinner has made the opposition batters look clueless and outfoxed them with his spin-bowling skills.
After India took the lead of 223 runs in the first innings, a superlative bowling effort was required from them to restrict Australia to a low total and make life difficult for them. And R Ashwin did exactly that and is turning out to be the difference between the sides.
He has extracted spin and bounces from the surface and had made a mockery of Australian batters. The off-spinner drew the first blood for his side as he removed Usman Khawaja (5) in the first over he bowled. But after that, he didn’t look back.
Ashwin went on to remove David Warner (10), Matt Renshaw (2), Peter Handscomb (6) and Alex Carey (10) to leave Australia tottering at 64/5 and complete his 31st five-wicket haul in the Tests. The off-spinner is the second-highest wicket-taker for India in Test and is 9th on the list of leading wicket-takers in the longest format of the game.
He sits behind Nathan Lyon (461) in the list and has 457* wickets to his name. With the way he’s going, it’s fair to say that he can surpass Australia’s off-spinner easily in the series.
