“A once in a generation player,” Virender Sehwag posts heart-warming birthday wish for Virat Kohli on twitter

Virat Kohli had made his international debut replacing Sehwag as opener in 2008

SehwagVirender Sehwag has posted a heart-warming message for the Indian captain Virat Kohli on his 33rd birthday. Sehwag, who has seen Virat go from strength to strength as a cricketer right from his teenage years to senior level international cricket, called Virat a “once in a generation” player.

Sehwag also insisted through his post that Virat will come out of the tough time he is going through right now and will dominate world cricket again.

When Virat Kohli had made his senior debut for India on the Sri Lanka tour in 2008, he had incidentally replaced Virender Sehwag at the top of the order as Sehwag had a stiff neck and India didn’t have a reserve opener on the bench.

MS Dhoni, who was the Indian captain at that time, went with Kohli as an opener in his debut series and the young right-hander didn’t let his captain down as he gave India decent starts in almost all the games he played in that series.

Kohli, thereafter, was slotted at no. 3 and at times at no. 4 as well when India’s preferred top order of Sehwag, Tendulkar and Gautam Gambhir returned. However, after the retirement of Tendulkar, Kohli became the permanent no. 3 for India.

Virender Sehwag is one of the few captains Kohli has played under at the international level

Virender Sehwag is one of the very few cricketers who have captained VIrat Kohli at the international level. Before Virat took over the vice-captaincy of the Indian team in 2012, it was Sehwag who was Dhoni’s deputy and stood in quite a few times as Indian captain when Dhoni was not there.

Sehwag himself has been a legendary cricketer for India for a number of years and he knows every cricketer goes through tough times at some point, however good he might be. Kohli has struggled for runs in IPL and T20 World Cup so far, but Sehwag has backed his statemate to come good soon and leave the lean patch behind.

The Indian skipper will take the field for India on his birthday today against Scotland and his fans would want him to make the day special with a vintage Virat innings.

I write a bit on cricket and I am more interested in technical and tactical side of the game, rather than bravado.
