Steve Smith is doing well for Washington Freedom in MLC 2024. Till now, as the skipper, he has not lost a game and as a batter, he is enjoying an average close to 60. It would not be a surprise if he lands an IPL contract before the next season. Here, we take a look at the list of three teams that could target the in-form Steve Smith for IPL 2025.
1) Chennai Super Kings
The advantage with Steve Smith is that he can play at different batting slots. In recent months, he has improved his strike-rate, as well. More importantly, he is a senior figure and would often do well in crunch situations.
CSK already has some plans in the top-order and for their overseas batting contingent. Steve Smith is also the profile that would find success at the franchise. Hence, CSK could target him.
2) Lucknow Super Giants
LSG is one of the teams that could target the in-form Steve Smith for IPL 2025. There are rumours that KL Rahul is likely to be released by LSG.
It needs to be noted that the owners of LSG had once appointed Steve Smith as the captain of their Pune franchise ahead of MS Dhoni. Nicholas Pooran is an option but the management might want him to focus on his batting. Hence, they can target someone experienced like Smith.
3) Punjab Kings
Punjab Kings would need a focal point in the squad. In the current squad, they have a lot of talented players but most of them do not have the leadership aura to bring the squad together in terms of performances.
PBKS will also be wanting a new skipper. Steve Smith has been doing well as both a batter and a skipper. PBKS has always done well under an Aussie and it would not be a surprise if Steve Smith goes to them.
