Gautam Gambhir will first want to help India win the WTC in the current cycle. To make this happen, he might take some interesting calls. One of the biggest challenges is the BGT which will start later this year. Gambhir could hand a return to some of the players. On that note, here, we take a look at the list of three players Gautam Gambhir could bring back to the Test squad.
1) Hardik Pandya
It has been a while since India had a pace-bowling all-rounder in Tests. In fact, it was Hardik Pandya who was in that role a few years ago. Now, due to his fitness issues, he does not play Tests.
That said, India needs such a player soon. Gambhir might want it for as early as the BGT this year. Therefore, Hardik could come back to the Test Team.
2) Cheteshwar Pujara
It might not be a surprise if Pujara has another chance in the Indian Team. While giving opportunities to youngsters is one topic, Gambhir will also want to secure victories at the same time. The No.3 role could be vital because Shubman Gill has been inconsistent.
In Australia, the battles will be tougher. India also does not have a ready backup. In this scenario, it would be better to have someone experienced like Pujara in the setup. He won’t take much time to get used to the No.3 role if given a chance.
3) Navdeep Saini
Navdeep Saini is one of the players Gautam Gambhir could bring back to the Test squad. Saini often credits Gambhir for spotting him and giving him an opportunity. Gambhir is also always appreciative of the skills of Saini.
Saini is in and out of the Indian Test Team. That said, he has the pace and attributes to make a mark with the red ball. He has also played in Australia before. Considering all these factors, Gambhir could bring him back to the setup.
