The ODI World Cup has been in existence since 1975. While some records are hard to break, in every edition, we at least see one or two records getting toppled. 1) Most centuries in ODI World Cup history – Sachin Tendulkar and Rohit Sharma (6 Centuries)
Both Rohit Sharma and Sachin Tendulkar have six centuries, so far in the history of the tournament. While Rohit has a chance to extend his record, there would also be other batters who might target to go past this record. Therefore, this record features on this list.
At the moment, though, David Warner is closest to beating this record. He currently has 4 WC centuries. He knows India very well and if he can smack two or more centuries, he would be in the picture to claim this record. If someone like Babar Azam finds form, he could come from behind to win this record, as well.
2) Most defeats in ODI World Cup history – Zimbabwe (42)
The most defeats in the ODI WC history is one of the World Cup records that might get broken in the 2023 ODI World Cup. From 1983 to 2015, Zimbabwe lost 42 games. The team will not play in the 2023 ODI World Cup.
The next team on the list is Sri Lanka. In 80 matches, they lost 39 games. They are just three behind Zimbabwe in this regard. Considering the team would take on some tough teams such as England, Australia and India, it is very much possible that Sri Lanka would lose more than three games. In that case, they will break this record.
3) Fastest half-century by a batter – Brendon McCullum (18 Balls) vs England in the 2015 World Cup
The former Kiwi captain once scored an 18-ball fifty. He also has a 20-ball fifty to his name. Since the last World Cup, the T20 game has evolved and scoring an 18-ball fifty may not be a hard task these days for the batters.
Therefore, in that regard, we could have some batters targeting this record later this year. Of course, a lot would depend on the situation but with the way that teams like England are playing, we could have plenty of batters get near to this record.
4) Most catches by a fielder in ODI World Cup history – Ricky Ponting (28)
The most catches by a fielder in ODI WC history is also one of the World Cup records that might get broken in the 2023 ODI World Cup. Leaving the wicket-keepers aside, Ricky Ponting currently holds the record for the most catches by a fielder. However, this record may not exist after ODI WC 2023.
In 17 matches at the ODI WC, Joe Root already has 20 catches. Getting eight more in nine games may not be an impossible task for him. Especially if the English pacers breathe fire at the start, Joe Root would have a lot of chances in the slip region.
